The publics View on Photography
Photography is another way to get information about something, besides just reading about it, especially when you cant actually touch or see it first hand.
Photography is the world's most popular hobby. We use it to document family milestones, capture beauty, reveal the ugliness of war and stalk celebrities.Photography has completely changed how we perceive ourselves and the world. Photography has completely changed the world, our lives and our opinions on things. Photography is not just a picture on a piece of paper it is used in movies, Television, and in the newspapers."
The greatest myth of the photograph is that photographs represent reality. True, the photographs are based on "real" things, but they are still the creation of the photographer. The photographer chooses which image to show, how to develope it, in what context it will be portrayed.
"I want you to use photography as an instrument of education -not self expression- so you might have a chance to matter." I think, if you use it that way, photography can change the world by reminding us of the truths -in the most deeply felt way and a way we don't use all the time.
In general, Yes it did. It allowed people to see things they might never see. It also has allowed news stories to carry a lot more impact, because the chock from the image can drive a point home. As they say, "A picture is worth a 1000 words". It has opened the world to everyone, in one way or another. it has also allowed our senses to be stimulated in more ways. Its another wat to get information about something, besides just reading about it, especially when you cant actually touch or see it first hand.
I think people tended to believe what was on pictures. There's this famous example of a photo around World War II with world leaders and one was taken out (a succesful pre-photoshop procedure that hardly anyone was aware of at the time). So that was falsification of history, pretending this was what actually happened but it wasn't really. On the other hand, also related to World War II, the actual pictures of the concentration camps were proof of what happened and no one would be able to deny what was going on. News photographers give us a report of what happens that we wouldn't believe without the photographer being present and reporting. It's making the unbelievable real to us. showing us the extremes of human behavior in a way: the good (the hero saving someone), the bad (people dying in nature catastrophy) and the ugly (people killing each other).
Photography was the perfect solution to art in the time of the enlightenment; scientific, reasonablewithout unnecessary flourishes. However the invention of photography changed the value of art - it could no longer be stated that art made after the invention of photography was only valuable as a snapshot of that time period; for that was the job of the camera. In a sense art was given a higher value as it portrayed a personal perception connected with historical events and philosophy.
